Today, Thursday, an armed attack on the security directorate for the Rabyana area of Kufra, a city in the Libyan desert on the borders with Chad and Sudan, resulted in the death of 1 officer and the wounding of seven others.

The Directorate of Security of the Rabiana region, where the Tebu tribes make up the majority of the population, and an armed group that is not known for its affiliation but is thought to be Chadian engaged in armed combat after the latter attempted to forcefully storm the directorate’s headquarters to release one of its detained elements.

Additionally, the Rabyana Security Directorate of the Ministry of Interior declared the death of one of its members while the Emergency and Ambulance Service said that 7 injured individuals were sent to the nearby hospital in Kufra to receive first aid.

This conflict brings to light the ongoing misery that the southern part of Libya endures at the hands of gangs and armed groups from abroad that rule the majority of the smuggling routes, deal in illegal immigrants and fuel, and engage in kidnapping and extortion. Additionally, it highlights the proliferation of weaponry and lax governmental security monitoring.

The locals in these regions are dissatisfied with the profusion of armed gangs linked to the Chadian resistance as well as those from the adjacent Sudan, particularly along Libya’s southern border.

Due to their size and proximity to the borders of several countries with unstable security, including Chad, Niger, and Sudan, these areas are also a permanent headquarters for terrorist organisations, which they use as a venue for their operations and as bases from which to attack other cities. This is true despite the Libyan army’s best efforts to secure them.
