US envoy to Yemen: The choice is clear, either the armistice or war

The US ambassador, Tim Lenderking, accused the Houthi militia of preventing the extension of the UN truce in Yemen while international and UN parties continue to work to restore the ceasefire.
In statements made today, for Wednesday, he emphasised that the Houthis imposed unacceptable conditions, such as paying their fighters’ salaries first.
He further emphasised that there is no question as to whether to resume the armistice or carry on with the fight.

According to what an Al-Arabiya/Al-Hadath correspondent reported, he explained that the United Nations is still active in the peace process and that there are still open channels for looking for a cease-fire once more.
In his conclusion, he emphasised that the ceasefire allowed Yemenis to travel abroad for medical treatment, helped Sanaa airport reopen, and allowed flights from the Yemeni capital to Cairo and Amman to resume.

Notably, international efforts to extend the previous armistice, which expired on October 2nd, are still ongoing (2022).
The Yemeni sides decided to prolong the ceasefire for two more months under the same conditions, from August 2 to October 2, 2022, the UN stated on August 2.
This prolongation followed a prior UN armistice that went into force in April 2022 and was in place for a two-month period on all fronts of conflict in Yemen.

Governorates to enable two flights per week to and from Sanaa International Airport, increase the freedom of movement of people inside Yemen, and facilitate the admission of 18 ships carrying gasoline to the ports of Hodeidah in western Yemen during the next two months.
The Houthi militia put up unreasonable conditions last week, preventing the truce’s prolongation for a third time.

The decision is clear: either the armistice or war, says the US envoy to Yemen.
