The Russian Embassy in Lithuania condemns the desecration of the memorial to Soviet soldiers

According to Russia Today, the Russian Embassy in Lithuania denounced the damage of the Soviet troops’ memorial in Vilnius’ Antakalnes Cemetery and urged the Lithuanian authorities to hold those responsible accountable.

The foreign mission posted on its Telegram channel, “We strongly condemn the sabotage act at the memorial to Soviet soldiers in the Antakalnes cemetery in the city of Vilnius and we call on the Lithuanian authorities to find the offenders and bring them to justice.”

The UN Human Rights Committee informed the Lithuanian authorities that it has temporarily placed memorials to Soviet soldiers under its protection until further clarity and urged them to stop from further deconstruction. The memorial was scheduled to be destroyed by November 1, 2022.
Lithuania will appeal the UN ruling, according to Justice Minister Evelina Dobrovolska, because the committee “was deceptive.”

The destruction of the memorial to Soviet soldiers at the cemetery in Vilnius has been delayed until November, according to Vilnius Mayor Remigius Chimachius.
“We have taken note of the recent statements made by Vilnius Mayor Remigius Simasius on this matter,” the Russian embassy added. He expresses his irritation at the UN Human Rights Committee’s suggestion to leave the monument standing. The Government of Lithuania promptly reminded him of this, though.

The mayor’s position and the inscriptions that were found at the crime scene, in the opinion of the diplomatic mission, “suggest that at least the leadership of the mayor’s office was the ideological motive for this cruel act. ”
The mayor was contacted by the Russian Embassy, who said: “We would want to personally appeal to Mr.

Chimachius, please refrain from touching the memorial to the Soviet troops who have passed away and are unable to respond to you. These are the soldiers to whom you directly owe your position as Vilnius’ mayor. Lithuania! Without them, Vilnius would not exist. Heroes, drop this from your to-do list and let the designated UN structure know you won’t be carrying out the stated harmful aim.

“We are confident that in honour of both Lithuanians and other peoples whose representatives are buried beneath this monument, you will deserve nothing but contempt and anger if you nevertheless carry out your terrible plans,” the embassy continued.
The military memorial in Antakalnis, built in 1951 in honour of those who died in the fights for the liberation of Vilnius in the summer of 1944, contains the graves of more than 3,000 members of the 3rd Belorussian Front.

In sum, the Baltic Republic served as the final resting place for over 80,000 sacrificed Soviet soldiers. the battle against fascism with their life.

The vandalism of the monument honouring Soviet soldiers is condemned by the Russian Embassy in Lithuania.
