Swedish politician cuts off hair in solidarity with Iranian women

A Swedish member of parliament chopped off her hair in support of Iranian women while speaking in front of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France.
Abir Al-Sahlani, an Iraqi native, took the risk overnight NZT, uttering the Kurdish phrase “women, life, freedom.”
We are going to stand with you until the women of Iran are free, she declared on stage.

The incident, the death of Mahsa Amini, 22, after her imprisonment for allegedly disobeying the Islamic Republic’s severe dress code, and the widespread protests that followed took happened at the same time as the event in Iran. Across Iran, protests have engulfed numerous cities and turned into the largest threat to the country’s government in recent memory.
In protest against the Iranian government, other women have been seen all around the world chopping off their hair.

Oscar-winning actors Juliette Binoche and Marion Cotillard have joined the campaign by recording themselves cutting their hair, along with other French film and music icons.
Even as the weeks-long anti-government rallies continued to spread to universities and high schools, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi made a plea for national harmony and attempted to calm tensions.

Raisi admitted that the Islamic Republic had “weaknesses and faults,” but he reaffirmed the official line that the uproar caused by the death of a lady while she was in the care of the nation’s morality police last month was nothing less than a conspiracy by Iran’s adversaries.
