Moscow calls for secret UN vote on Ukraine’s regions

Vasily Nebenzia, the Russian ambassador to the UN, sent a letter to all UN members in which he expressed his opinion that any resolution denouncing Russia’s “referendums” that was drafted by the West and approved by the UN General Assembly is politicised, provocative, and obviously intended to widen the rift within the General Assembly.

On attempts to denounce the “annexation” of Ukrainian territories, the Russian envoy to the UN has advocated for a secret vote next week rather than a public vote.
Because of Western pressure, Nebenzia claimed, it is extremely difficult to express one’s opinions publicly. Therefore, secret ballots are required.
Putin signed an order on Wednesday formalising Russia’s acquisition of the Zaporizhia nuclear power facility in southern Ukraine.

Rafael Grossi, the director of the International Atomic Energy Agency, declared that the issue was “more urgent than ever” and that he would be travelling to Geneva to discuss the creation of a safe zone surrounding the plant.

The bill to annex Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhia, which he partially seized, was also signed by Vladimir Putin despite the retreat of his forces. He also emphasised that he expected stability to rule in the Lugansk and Donetsk regions (east), as well as Zaporizhia and Kherson (south).

He emphasised that Moscow has enormous respect for the Ukrainian people despite the current circumstances, in reference to the conflict that has broken out since last February, in a meeting with a number of teachers in the nation that was shown on state television today, Wednesday.
It was unclear whether Putin intended to conquer further Ukrainian districts, but he acknowledged that “the liberation of new territory became possible thanks to the Russian army.”

Further affirming that “the lands acquired by his country a few days ago in Ukraine would stay Russian forever,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said earlier on Wednesday.
