Lithuania: X-ray examination of cross-border freight trains with Belarus

Lithuania has built a new X-ray system to screen freight trains on its border with Belarus, according to Gentari Skesti, Lithuania’s minister of finance, who made the announcement on Wednesday.
The action aims to more effectively regulate the flow of individuals and assist in preventing goods smuggling.
Schiste added, “We can carefully watch the supplies arriving from the adjacent countries.
The technology fulfils the needs of the nation’s national security and first runs in test mode.

But companies can also save money and time with faster inspections and simplified procedures.
Lithuania has seen an increase in smuggled goods since the migration crisis at the border with Belarus in late summer 2021.
Despite the reduced volume of goods, there are still plenty of shipments coming from the neighboring country, according to BNS.
The European Union has long imposed sanctions on Belarus and its ruler, Alexander Lukashenko, in the conflict with the country.

The transportation of specific items by rail is subject to these penalties.
Four to eight freight trains pass via the Lithuanian-Belarus border each day, according to Lithuanian border guards.
According to a statement, virtually every week, authorities uncovered sizable shipments of illicit products from Belarus. Freight trains at the Kina border station were manually inspected for a while because of a defect in the prior inspection system.

The X-ray inspection equipment, according to Deauville Kraulaiden, deputy Lithuanian border guard, “is unique in that it can check the train even if it’s travelling at 60 kilometres per hour, so the train doesn’t have to slow down.”
Within an hour, the system delivers high-quality photos for evaluation.
