MUNICH, Germany, October 4 (Reuters) – In the Champions League on Tuesday, Bayern Munich defeated Viktoria Plzen 5-0 to maintain their lead in Group C and establish a record for the longest run of unbeaten games in a group. In the opening twenty-one minutes of the game, Bayern Munich scored three goals.
The Germans have now surpassed Real Madrid’s record of 30 group games without a loss in the competition.
In addition, they have netted nine goals in their previous two games across all competitions following their 4-0 Bundesliga victory over Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday, which snapped a four-game losing streak.
The hosts soon took control after goals from Leroy Sane in the seventh minute, Serge Gnabry five minutes later, and Sadio Mane in the 21st.
The Bavarians encountered no opposition from the Czechs and took advantage of large openings in their defence whenever possible. On Saturday, the Bavarians will play Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga’s Der Klassiker.
The team totally outran their opponents despite the absence of Thomas Mueller and Joshua Kimmich due to COVID-19, and Jamal Musiala should have made it 4-0 in the 25th minute had he not shot against Marian Tvrdon with only the goalkeeper to beat.
The Germany international felt he had atoned for his mistake in the 36th minute when he curled a shot past Tvrdon following a rapid German play, but the goal was disallowed due to offside.
Bayern, however, continued where they left off after the interval, with Sane scoring five minutes into the second half off of a brilliantly lofted cross from Mane.
In place of Eric Just before the hour mark, Maxim Choupo-Moting completed the thrashing by scoring on a shot off the post, giving Bayern the group lead with nine points after three games.
Later on Tuesday, Inter Milan and Barcelona—both with three points—will square off.
5-0 victory over Viktoria Plzen by Bayern sets a new record.
