A Lebanese MP ends a sit-in in a bank in an effort to get her savings

Lebanese MP Cynthia Zarazir put an end to her bank sit-in on Wednesday after attempting to persuade the institution to let her use her frozen savings to pay for surgery later this week.
In a town north of the city, Beirut, Zarazir was observed leaving the Byblos Bank, yet she remained silent regarding whether or not she had received the $8,500 she had requested.

With a group of association affiliates, the legislator went into a Byblos Bank location north of Beirut early on Wednesday morning to demand access to its frozen savings.
As frustration among residents grows over the informal restrictions that banks have implemented since the economic slump started in 2019, bank break-ins are increasing across Lebanon.

Several depositors repeatedly stormed banks during the month of September, detaining personnel and demanding their deposits before taking some of them.
In addition, seven banks in Lebanon were stormed in a single week last month, which led the nation’s banking association to declare a closure that lasted for almost a week.

The last of the bank raids occurred yesterday when irate depositors, at least two of them armed, entered four commercial banks in Lebanon due to withdrawal restrictions put in place due to the country’s financial collapse. This month has also seen the storming of five banks in addition to the storming carried out by the parliamentarian.
