China calls on UN member states to honor their financial commitments

All UN members, particularly big shareholders, were urged to meet their financial obligations on time and in full by China’s deputy permanent representative, Dai Bing.

According to the China News Agency, Dai Bing stated Tuesday that member states must put their promises into practise in order to ensure the work of the United Nations and the execution of its mandates. This was the opening statement of the main session of the Fifth Committee of the 77th General Assembly of the United Nations, which deals with internal affairs related to administration and budget at the United Nations.

“The financial situation of the United Nations remains worrying,” he continued, “as one of the major contributors continues to have long arrears, which is the primary cause of the liquidity crisis in the United Nations, despite repeated calls from the majority of member states and letters from the Secretary-General to Member States in which he expressed his concern.

Taking note of the fact that China urges all parties to engage in extensive consultations and pursue win-win cooperation, and thinks that programme planning should follow the concept supported by member states and take into account the legitimate interests and aspirations of member states
