Canadian sex workers are challenging criminal laws in court. Here’s why

A coalition of sex worker rights organisations is requesting that various provisions of the Criminal Code be ruled unconstitutional in Ontario Superior Court on Monday.
Sections of the law that make it illegal to communicate to acquire or sell sexual services or advertise sexual services, according to the Canadian Alliance for Sex Work Law Reform, are in violation of workers’ Charter rights.
Additionally, it forces sex workers to labour in hazardous, secluded situations, according to group coordinator Jenn Clamen.

She claims that there shouldn’t be any regulations that are specifically related to sex work, and she has numerous suggestions for how to make the sector more controlled.
The prostitution ban was overbroad and disproportionate, according to the Supreme Court of Canada, which invalidated it in 2013.
However, advocacy groups claim that the regulations that the Harper administration later implemented did not improve the situation for sex workers.
