Halifax joins worldwide rally for freedom in Iran

On Saturday, hundreds of people gathered in Halifax as part of a worldwide rally in support of the Iranian independence movement.
Since the death of Mahsa Amini, 22, two weeks ago, Iran’s streets have seen a flurry of protests.
In police detention on September 16, Amini passed away. She was detained in Iran by the morality police for having “unsuitable clothes,” including a poorly worn headscarf and violating a rigidly enforced dress code.

Amini’s family questions Iranian authorities’ claims that she suffered a heart attack and was not mistreated, while UN experts have indicated that records imply she was badly assaulted. Iranian officials maintain that she was not mistreated before she died.
One of the rally’s organisers, Atousa Costandi, described the killing of Amini as “disgusting.” There have apparently also been numerous demonstrators slain in Iran.
She said, “Killing an innocent girl is unbelievable.”

“I am scared for all the Iranian ladies who must experience this. It’s frightful.
Although Costandi was born in Iran, she has spent more than 20 years residing in Nova Scotia. She claimed that despite continuous internet disruptions, she still has family in Iran that she is unable to contact.
“I’m concerned about them, and I’m concerned about the entire nation. It’s really frightful, she said.
150 locations, including Halifax, held demonstrations advocating for Iran’s liberation.

Iranian-born Reza Rahimi, whose mother-in-law, Halifax dentist Shari Faghihi, was murdered in a jet shot down by the Iranian military in January 2020, was among the attendees on Saturday.
Rahimi claimed that he was there in support of the suffering Iranians.
Rahimi added, “It’s not like here, where you can just congregate in Victoria Park.
“Police will arrest them if they are in the street or go outside, and police will shoot at them while doing so.

“Therefore, the least I can do for the Canadian politicians is to come here and inform them of what is occurring in Iran. They are putting up the effort. They are placing themselves above their lives.
In addition, women all across the world have been protesting by cutting their hair short to express their outrage and grief.
The rally’s co-organizer Sophie Hashimi cut her hair in front of an audience on Thursday at Parade Square.
They are requesting extremely fundamental human rights.

Regarding Iranian women, she stated, “They want to chose to pick what they wear. This hair is not what I desire. Let folks be free, please. It’s done.
According to Costandi, the purpose of the demonstration was to encourage the government to impose further sanctions on Iran and to give a voice to Iranians who are being punished for expressing their ideas.
“I want the entire world to be aware that there are Iranians in this nation that need assistance. They require our assistance, she said.

They must understand that we support them and that, maybe very soon, we will win back their human rights.
