The people of Karrada neighbourhood were startled by the collapse of a structure as the Iraqi capital awaited today, Saturday, a “October wedding,” as protesters flocked to its squares to mark the third anniversary of the October 2019 demonstrations.
According to the Civil Defense Directorate, efforts are being made to “rescue the inmates under the rubble of the structure that comprises stores.”
It is situated in the heart of Baghdad, on a distinguished commercial medical street that is home to numerous pharmacies and medical testing facilities.
According to the Iraqi News Agency, it also stated in a statement that its personnel are continuing their efforts to rescue the inmates after they were able to dig 13 people out from beneath the rubble (INA).
While two deaths were reported, there has been no official confirmation of this information or an estimation of the number of persons who may still be trapped under the debris.
The structure is relatively recent, therefore it is not deteriorated, and its foundations are supposed to be strong, unlike other old buildings in the region. This was the biggest surprise, according to the Al-Arabiya/Al-Hadath correspondent.
