Public inquest set over Curtis McKenzie’s death in Sask. jail

From October 31 to November 2 in 2022, a public inquest into Curtis McKenzie’s passing will take place at the Coronet Hotel in Prince Albert.
McKenzie, 27, was discovered unresponsive in his cell in the Saskatchewan Penitentiary in Prince Albert on February 26, 2020.
Responding medical professionals took him to Prince Albert’s Victoria Hospital. The official death date for McKenzie was March 9, 2020.

According to Section 20 of The Coroners Act, 1999, unless the coroner is satisfied that the individual’s death was fully due to natural causes and was not preventable, an inquiry into the death of a person who passes away while a prisoner at a jail or a correctional facility must be held.
All abrupt, unexpected deaths must be investigated by the Saskatchewan Coroners Service.

An inquest is conducted to determine the identity of the deceased, their exact location and time of death, as well as the cause and manner of death. The coroner’s jury may offer suggestions for averting similar fatalities.
Tim Hawryluk, the coroner, will be in charge of the inquest.
The inquiry will start on the first day at 10 a.m.
