Zelensky meets with army chiefs to discuss “liberation” plans

While Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with army commanders on Friday to discuss the strategy to “liberate” Ukrainian lands under Russian control, Russian President Vladimir Putin formally proclaimed the annexation of four regions in eastern Ukraine to his nation.
Zelensky claimed on Telegram that he and the military officials also talked about arm transfers and other potential Russian plans for Ukraine.

In this situation, Lyman in eastern Ukraine was reportedly about to be encircled by Ukrainian forces, according to Western and Russian assessments. According to the Associated Press, retaking the city might allow Ukraine to advance further into one of the regions that Russia illegally acquired.
Notably, Moscow was prevented from consolidating its control over the military frontlines by the recent Ukrainian counteroffensive, which was supported by Western-supplied armaments.

As Ukrainian forces advance there in an effort to encircle Lyman, its hold over the Lugansk region seems to be waning. In the nearby Donetsk region, Ukraine continues to control a substantial amount of ground.
The larger Donbass region in eastern Ukraine is made up of the regions of Lugansk and Donetsk, which have been torn apart by fighting since separatists there proclaimed independence in 2014.

Along with Lugansk and Donetsk, two other regions were legally annexed to Russia today in a ceremony held in the Kremlin: all of Kherson and portions of Zaporizhia.
