The Russian President signs a decree recognizing the independence of Zaporizhia and Kherson provinces

Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, signed proclamations on Thursday recognising Kherson and Zaporizhia as independent nations.

According to the Russian news agency Sputnik, the decree read: “I have decided: to recognise the sovereignty and independence of the Kherson region in accordance with the principles and rules of international law, which affirms the principle of equal rights and self-determination of peoples, enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations. I have also taken into account the will of the residents of the Kherson region in the referendum held on September 27, 2022.

Similar legislation recognised the Zaporizhia region’s independence and sovereignty.
There were referendums from September 23 to September 27. Similar actions were taken by Putin in February with regard to the Luhansk and Donetsk areas as well as Crimea earlier.

The Zaporizhia and Kherson provinces are recognised as independent by a decree signed by the Russian president.
