The European Union condemns the prison sentence of the former Myanmar leader and stresses that the trial is politically motivated

Given that the case was solely political in nature, the European Union has denounced the Myanmar court’s decision to sentence the nation’s former leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, and its former Australian economic advisor, Sean Tornell, to three years in prison for breaking the Official Secrets Act.

These actions represent a blatant attempt to exclude democratically elected officials from the open discussion process that the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), which includes Aung San Suu Kyi and her previous party, the National League for Democracy, has called for. It should be highlighted that the current issue in Myanmar can only be resolved by an open conversation with the National League, the Government of National Unity, civil society, and other stakeholders.

Aung San Suu Kyi now faces 23 years in prison, three of which will be spent performing hard labour, according to the statement, and she is still being held on further fraudulent charges, the real intent of which is obvious. Therefore, we once again urgently demand the release of all political prisoners and all people who have been unlawfully detained.

The European Union emphasises that the prosecution was politically motivated and opposes the former leader of Myanmar’s prison term.
