Spain announces that it has joined Ukraine in the lawsuit against Russia submitted to the International Court of Justice

Spain has declared that it has joined Ukraine in the lawsuit brought by the International Court of Justice by launching the legal actions brought by Ukraine against Russia in connection with the allegations made under the Genocide Convention.
The Spanish Embassy in The Hague submitted a declaration of Spain’s accession to the lawsuit to the International Court of Justice, according to a news release from the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued today, Thursday.

By taking this action, Spain joins other European Union members, such as the United States and Canada, who have already made declarations of a similar nature.
The Spanish Foreign Ministry stated that Spain “expressed its position that the court had jurisdiction to consider this matter” in its announcement.

Concerning the interpretation, application, and implementation of the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, Ukraine filed a case against Russia on February 26 before the principal tribunal of the United Nations. A factor in Russia’s recognition of the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics and the execution of a special military operation was Kyiv’s denial of the presence of genocide in the Donbass. dispute.

The International Court of Justice compelled Russia to immediately halt the special operation in Ukraine that started on February 24 on March 16. Dmitry Peskov’s press secretary stated that Moscow could not abide with the court’s ruling, and Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for the foreign ministry, agreed that Ukraine had “clearly abused the jurisdiction” of the court by bringing a case based on the Genocide Convention.

Spain declares that it has joined Ukraine in the International Court of Justice complaint filed against Russia.
