The situation in Britain, where Prime Minister Lise Terrace’s proposal for a significant tax cut has wreaked havoc on financial markets, has prompted alarm from France’s finance minister, Bruno Le Maire, who expressed it on Friday.
Le Maire said on Europe 1 radio, “I am not worried about the position of the euro, but I am concerned about the situation in Britain.
He continued by saying that Britain is also footing the bill for leaving the EU.
The financial plan for Terrace, which was unveiled by Chancellor of the Exchequer Kwasi Quarting last Friday, has sparked a crisis of confidence in the British government, causing the value of the pound and the price of government bonds to fall, as well as causing turbulence in international financial markets.
“Leaving Europe comes at a significant cost because Europe gives protection, and the eurozone has provided us with protection during the Covid crisis,” Le Maire added.
