A former US National Security Agency employee has been detained by US officials on suspicion of trying to sell sensitive material to a foreign nation.
According to the American network (NBC), Gary Sebastian Delkey, 30, worked for the authority between June 6 and July 1 of this year as a designer for the protection of information systems.
The case records state that between August of last year and September of this year, Delkey transferred portions of three classified documents he had obtained while working to a person who claimed to be an undercover FBI agent but was actually a fake foreign government employee using an encrypted email account. The case documents did not name the foreign nation, but they did mention that Delkey tried to confirm that agent by getting in touch with the Russian intelligence service (SVR).
Delkey planned to deliver more sensitive documents to the undercover agent in Denver, Colorado, but he was detained by FBI agents as soon as he arrived at the venue for the rendezvous there.
Delkey said that he sent the secret agent vital information about foreign hacking of US systems and details of US electronic security activities.
Delkey is accused of breaking the US Espionage Act, which makes it illegal to provide or attempt to send national security information to a foreign official with the hope or expectation that it will be utilised against the United States or in favour of another nation.
