United Nations: Atomic Energy Team begins its mission in Zaporozhye, Ukraine

Following months of discussions amid worries about a potential catastrophe at Europe’s largest nuclear site, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Raffaele Mariano Grossi, has voiced confidence that they will be able to safely carry out their technical job. This occurred while the IAEA team of specialists was beginning its trip to examine the circumstances at the nuclear power facility.

The team’s top responsibilities, according to a UN statement, are to ensure nuclear safety and security at the facility, as well as to carry out essential protective tasks and evaluate the working conditions for Ukrainian employees who are employed there.

The UN agency’s director estimated that the task would take a few days, but cautioned that it might take longer if they can maintain a constant presence on the site. He noted that his team is made up of people with extensive experience and includes some of the best and brightest in the fields of protection, safety, and security. And we know what’s happening very well.

The International Atomic Energy Agency’s director is in charge of the 13-person expedition from Vienna, Austria, that departed for Ukraine on Monday, according to the United Nations. The following day, he visited with President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv.
