Ryabkov: Russia does not accept Geneva as a negotiating platform with the United States

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov stated that Russia will explore for alternatives to Geneva as a forum for bilateral negotiations with the United States.

Taking into account Switzerland’s full integration with the European Union’s approach to assessing the Russian special military operation, the role of Geneva as an international capital and a platform for conducting many international contacts, including bilateral contacts between Russia and the United States, has significantly declined, according to the Deputy Minister.

According to Russia Today, you are willing to accept Geneva’s function as a conversation forum, and we will explore for alternatives.
Previously, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated that owing to the loss of its neutral status, Switzerland cannot promote Ukraine’s interests in Russia.
Due to the lack of diplomatic relations between Russia and Ukraine, the Swiss Foreign Ministry stated on August 10 that it is willing to advocate Ukraine’s interests on Russian land.

This was predicated on the Ukrainian party’s wish to represent Switzerland’s interests on Russian soil, and a spokesperson from the Swiss Foreign Ministry said that the country was willing to act as a mediator between nations and to organise conversations and meetings.

However, in February, for the first time in 200 years, Switzerland abandoned the principle of neutrality when it joined the European Union’s sanctions against Russia, prohibiting all property of persons named on the lists of European Union sanctions, as well as the establishment of any new business relationships with any of these people.

Switzerland has also sanctioned high-ranking Russian officials, cancelled the 2009 visa facilitation deal for Russian individuals, and restricted Swiss airspace to all flights to and from Russia, as well as all Russian-branded aircraft.
