UN: 1.3 million Palestinian children at risk as they prepare for school

According to Lynne Hastings, the UN’s humanitarian coordinator in the Palestinian territories under occupation, more than 1. 3 million Palestinian youngsters from the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip are getting ready to go back to school.
Children in the West Bank and Gaza confront difficulties that many children across the world cannot fathom, Hastings noted in a statement that the Middle East News Agency obtained a copy of.

20 children have been slain in the West Bank since the year’s commencement, compared to 12 during the same period last year.
There have been 56 orders to demolish schools where at least 6,400 Palestinian children attend school, according to the UN humanitarian coordinator.

He noted that the United Nations had documented 115 instances of violations of the educational process during the first half of 2022, including the use of tear gas, threats, military presence in schools, detentions, and restrictions on students’ ability to move to and from their schools, which had a negative impact on about 8,000 students. And as a result, there were more worries about them quitting school.

He emphasised that 17 children had died as a result of the recent uptick in violence in Gaza, that 65% of schools were operating on a two-shift schedule, that schools were overcrowded with students, and that Gazan students needed psychological assistance to deal with the effects of the uptick in violence against them.

The UN coordinator expressed his hope that all pupils would be able to exercise their fundamental right to an education while reiterating the organization’s dedication to safeguarding kids from harm and promoting their self-actualization.
