News from Al-Madina: The Public Security Directorate’s official data shows a 5.3% decline in the number of crimes committed in Jordan during the last five years, especially from 2017 to 2021.
The number of criminal offences committed in Jordan declined by 14.9% in 2021 compared to 2020.
According to the report, the number of criminal offences committed in the Kingdom reduced last year to 5,418 from 6,369 in 2020.
The term “felony” refers to the most serious forms of crimes, with penalties ranging from the death sentence to life imprisonment with hard labour or jail.
Criminal stealing topped the list of criminal offences committed in 2021, with 2,827 crimes registered, a decrease from 3,761 crimes recorded in 2020.
The crime of indecent assault was rated second on the list, with 904 offences committed in 2021, a rise from the previous year, when 822 instances of indecent assault were registered.
The crime of severe abuse came in third position, with the Kingdom recording 657 cases of severe abuse in the preceding year, compared to 658 offences in the previous year 2020.
** Misdemeanor infractions
In terms of the gravity of the offences, the misdemeanour ranks second, punishable by imprisonment and the payment of a fine, or one of these two punishments.
According to the statistics analysed by Hala News, there was a 1.5% decline in minor crimes committed in the Kingdom over the previous year, with 15,940 misdemeanour crimes registered in 2021, compared to 16,187 crimes in the preceding year 2020.
Minor stealing ranked first on the list of misdemeanour crimes, with 6,852 offences committed in 2021.
With 3,552 offences documented last year, fraud was rated second on the list of misdemeanour crimes.
With 2,116 offences documented in 2021, the crime of employee resistance and violence placed third.
According to data from the Public Security Directorate, the overall number of crimes committed in Jordan during the last year amounted to 21,358 distinct offences, with the exclusion of narcotics crimes.
Jordan’s crime rate has dropped by 5.3% in the last five years.
