South Korea elected president of the International Arms Treaty’s decision-making body

On Sunday, the South Korean Foreign Ministry announced that Seoul had been chosen for a one-year term as the chairman of the main international body that makes decisions regarding the international trade in conventional weapons.
At the closing ceremony of the Eighth Conference of Nations Parties to the Arms Trade Treaty in Geneva, the member states of the ATT made the elections unanimously, according to the South Korean news agency Yonhap.

From August of this year to August of next year, the Ninth Conference of States Parties to the Arms Trade Treaty will be presided over by the South Korean mission in Geneva’s deputy permanent representative and ambassador for disarmament. This will be South Korea’s first presidency at the Arms Trade Treaty Conference since the treaty entered into domestic force in February 2017.

South Korea is the next president of the organisation that makes decisions about the International Arms Treaty.
