The pupils benefiting from Kevin McGrath’s chess lessons at a Kaitaia school are good people.
Chess took off when Papa Kev, as he is known, started assisting at Te Kura Kaupapa Mori o Pukemiro two years ago.
Farmer McGrath said, “It was like being in the All Blacks; we qualified for the Nationals.
The school’s chess funds were utilised to construct a sizable outside chess set so pupils could play whenever they wanted when the nationals were postponed due to Covid.
