Everything you need to know about restricting the content of accounts under 16 years of age on Instagram

Instagram has announced new updates to the sensitive content filtering feature that focus on teen users’ privacy and security.
On Thursday, Instagram published an updated version of the introduction to the Sensitive Content Control blog post from June 6. The popular photo and video sharing app has emphasised the additional precautions it would include in the new edition to protect younger users.

Among the efforts taken include putting new teenage user accounts to default to the option to limit less sensitive information, sending prompts to other adolescents recommending a less sensitive alternative, and trial prompts urging teen users to examine and update their privacy and security settings.

According to Digitaltrends, Instagram’s sensitive content management settings allow users (including children and adults) to set content limitations that filter out sensitive information (themes such as drugs or weapons) in places such as Instagram search results or suggested content.
However, setting these limitations does not filter information from the accounts you follow. Adult users have three options for filtering material: more, standard, or less.

More allows for more sensitive content, Standard allows for some sensitive information, and Less allows for some sensitive content.
According to Instagram, teen users often have access to the Standard and fewer choices. New user accounts created under the age of 16 will now be assigned a lower option by default. Teens who had Instagram accounts before to the change will receive a notification informing them that they should choose the Less option for their own account.

Instagram is also introducing a new prompt for young users to assess and update their privacy and security settings. When the app is updated, teen users may adjust the settings that control content re-sharing, conversations, and the content they view, as well as the amount of time they spend in the app.
