The UN mission in Libya warns: the use of force is unacceptable

The UN Support Mission in Libya issued a warning against using violence in the wake of the military buildup in Tripoli, Libya, and the ongoing conflict between the governments of Abdel Hamid Dabaiba and Fathi Bashagha.
The mobilisation of soldiers and threats to use force to resolve the claims of legitimacy in the nation were reaffirmed by the organisation in a statement posted on its official website today, Tuesday.

Additionally, she stated that the Libyan people’s exercise of their right to pick their leaders and the restoration of the legitimacy of state institutions through democratic elections are the only ways to address the current political impasse and all other parts of the country’s situation.

The mission emphasised that it will continue to cooperate with all parties and the pertinent Libyan institutions in order to expeditiously put the electoral process back on track.
It also demanded that the escalation stop right now, repeating that using force by any party is inappropriate and won’t provide any outcomes that would guarantee acceptance by the world community.

This warning was issued after the head of the unity government, Abdel Hamid al-Dabaiba, yesterday increased security around the government’s headquarters in response to his rival’s recent announcement that he intended to travel to Tripoli in order to seize power, in preparation for any attack by the militias loyal to Bashagha, who are stationed there with all of their equipment.

It is interesting that this dispute between the two governments has persisted for months with no sign of a quick resolution.

The use of force is inadmissible, the UN mission in Libya says.
