The Guardian: Ukraine warns of Russian attack during Independence Day celebrations

British writer Osobile Koshio alluded to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s warnings to Russia of the repercussions of any attack on Ukrainian territory during Wednesday’s Independence Day festivities in an essay published by the Guardian newspaper.

The Ukrainian president further stated that any Russian invasion would be greeted with a harsh response by Ukrainian troops, stating his view that Russian forces are presently planning an attack on the capital, Kyiv, on the 31st anniversary of the country’s independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.
The author notes that as Ukraine celebrates its independence day, there are rumours that Moscow is planning strikes on the city.

At the same time, the writer notes that the United States of America issued an emergency warning on Tuesday to all of its citizens to leave Ukraine immediately, fearing that they would be targeted by Russian forces, who are expected to launch a military operation against government and civilian targets in the coming days.

According to the author, the Ukrainian authorities took many preventive precautions in anticipation of such assaults, including prohibiting gatherings in the capital, Kyiv, to commemorate the country’s independence day, as well as cancelling the annual military parade.

The author cited what the Ukrainian president said about an increasing threat from Russian forces against Ukrainian targets, emphasising that he would not accept any proposal to freeze the current front lines solely to appease Russia, which currently controls about 22 percent of Ukrainian territory, including the Crimean peninsula.

According to the author, on the anniversary of Kyiv’s independence from the Soviet Union, the US will unveil a fresh assistance package to Ukraine worth around $3 billion to enable Ukrainian troops to oppose Russian forces, particularly on the eastern and southern fronts of the battlefield.

The author also mentions the Ukrainian president’s warning, delivered at a meeting of representatives from 60 countries around the world, that a decline in Western aid to his country would pose a major threat to the entire world, emphasising that his country will one day become a member of the European Union.

The writer responded to British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s remarks at the conference, in which he stated that the UK will continue to offer military, economic, and diplomatic support to Ukraine until Russia withdraws from all Ukrainian territory.

The author closes her piece by alluding to the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense’s warning to Ukrainians to be cautious, particularly on Independence Day, for fear of missile assaults by Russian forces.
