Al-Madina News reports that the US asked that the Syrian regime fully disclose and destroy its chemical weapons programme in accordance with its international commitments on Sunday.
In a statement issued today on the ninth anniversary of the Syrian regime’s deployment of chemical weapons in Damascus Ghouta, the US State Department made this claim.
The lethal chemical sarin was used on Syrian residents on August 21, 2013, by the Syrian dictatorship, killing 1,400 people, the majority of whom were children, in the Damascus Ghouta neighbourhood, the statement continued.
He said, “Today we commemorate this terrible event and renew our commitment to holding those accountable.
The statement emphasised that we vehemently oppose the use of chemical weapons by anybody, anywhere, and in any situation.
Chemical weapon users won’t get away with it, and the US will use all tools at its disposal to promote accountability for such assaults, he said.
He said that the United States demands that the Assad regime fully disclose and eliminate its chemical weapons programme in accordance with its international commitments and permit the OPCW declaration assessment team to travel to Syria to ensure that all outstanding issues regarding its chemical weapons programme have been resolved.
According to the statement, the United States fully backs international initiatives spearheaded by Syrians to bring about justice for the countless atrocities committed against the Syrian people.
We also reaffirm our commitment to a comprehensive political resolution of the Syrian issue in accordance with Resolution 2254 of the UN Security Council.
The Security Council member states are urged to support efforts to create a ceasefire in Resolution 2254, which was enacted on December 18, 2015. Resolution 2254 demands that all parties immediately stop all strikes on civilian targets.
