Mali.. Appointment of an officer as acting head of government

Colonel Asimi Gueta, the head of Mali’s ruling military junta, designated Colonel Abdoulaye Maiga, Minister of Regional Administration and Decentralization, as temporary head of government on Sunday, replacing civilian Shogul Kokala Maiga, who was hospitalised a few days ago.

Colonel Abdullah Maiga, Minister of Regional Administration and Decentralization, has been appointed as acting prime minister and prime minister in place of Shogul Kukala Maiga, according to a proclamation read on state television.
Abdoulaye Maiga, 40, served as the government’s spokesman in addition to his decentralisation job.

Maiga was inconspicuous before to his appointment as a government spokesperson at the end of 2021, and he appeared in this role on state television often in recent months, issuing some of the administration’s most effective and scathing accusations against France.
Maiga called on French President Emmanuel Macron to reject his neocolonialism and highness at the end of July.
Colonel Maiga was not among the officers that took control alongside Colonel Gueta in August 2020.

Following the appointment of an officer as the head of the government, the heads of the executive authority temporarily became military, knowing that the military council had agreed, under international pressure after the coup of 2020, to keep the two positions in civilian hands while retaining supreme authority in decisions.

Shogul Kokala Maiga, a senior Mali politician, was named prime minister following the second coup in May 2021, but he fell unwell about a week ago and was moved to a hospital for treatment, according to a medical official.
The Prime Ministers Office reported on its Facebook page that Prime Minister Shogul Kukala Maiga is taking a forced sabbatical on the advice of his doctor after 14 months of hard labour.

Many Mali political heavyweights have been denouncing Maiga and pushing for his resignation for months.
Many of his erstwhile partners in the June 5 Movement for the Rally of National Forces, of which he was a founding member, accused him of forsaking the true battle for change and working for his own interests rather than the country’s.
