Swedish Immigration Minister: We are willing to limit visas for Russian people, but not altogether prohibit them.

According to Swedish Migration Minister Anders Eggman, his country’s government is willing to set limitations on the granting of visas to Russian citizens, but would not cease providing them.

“I think it would be impossible to stop altogether; it would be a mistake,” Eggman said. “On the other hand, rigorous restriction, for example, by scrapping the streamlined visa system, is what we, Estonia, Finland, and others aspire to in the European Union.”

The minister stated that sanctions should not be put on regular folks, saying, “We want the sanctions to first affect Russia’s political and economic elite.” This conversation is with Russia.”

An official in Brussels previously stated that on August 30-31, the European Union’s foreign ministers will consider the proposal of Estonia and Finland to ban the issuance of short-term visas to Russian citizens in order to force them to “pay the price” for the military operation in Ukraine during an informal meeting in Prague. While the majority of southern and western European Union countries reject such a move.
