During the Republican primaries, Trump’s opponents were removed.

Former US President Donald Trump’s critics allege he is aiming to cleanse his own party of any opposition before of this year’s midterm elections.

A spate of Trump’s opponents have dropped out of primary battles, which choose House candidates ahead of the November election.

Liz Cheney of Wyoming is the most recent incumbent to fall against an old acquaintance, Harriet Hageman.

Prior to the 2016 election, Hageman termed Trump “racist and xenophobic,” and dubbed him “the weakest candidate.” She’s subsequently reversed her position, gaining his support for the primaries and thanking him for her triumph.

“This was not something I accomplished on my own. We are all obviously grateful to President Trump “She addressed a crowd full of applauding fans.

Cheney, on the other hand, has been unwavering in her condemnation of Trump since the attack on the US Capitol on January 6, 2021. She assured the throng assembled for her concession address that her political career was far from finished.

“I will do everything it takes to guarantee that Donald Trump never again sits in the Oval Office – and I mean it,” she declared.

Cheney is one of just two Republicans on the Committee looking into the Capitol incident and Trump’s efforts to reverse the election.

Other Republicans who have ventured to criticise the former president have fallen out of favour – and out of politics.

Three of the ten members of Congress who voted to impeach Donald Trump have lost their seats to candidates he has publicly campaigned for, while three others have claimed death threats from the former president’s followers as reasons for not running for re-election.

There have been some minor victories for Republicans who oppose Trump; in Alaska, Senator Lisa Murkowski faced an opponent backed by the former president.

“I hope we do not become a one-person party. I hope we do not become Donald Trump’s party “She stated.

Murkowski and her opponent both advanced to the midterm elections.
