5 years in jail for potential ISIS membership

The Court of Appeal, presided over by Counselor Nasr Al Haid, reversed the conviction of a Kuwaiti teen accused of joining ISIS and sentenced him to five years in jail with hard labour after he admitted the charges against him.
The young man was charged with supporting ISIS and disseminating his ideas on social media by the Public Prosecution.

The investigator for the event showed that the accused is a part of the ISIS organisation, which seeks to overthrow Kuwait’s foundational institutions. He confessed to joining the group in January 2021 after viewing video clips, and when he was detained at Kuwait Airport upon his return from abroad, he pledged allegiance to Amira Abu Ibrahim Al-Qurashi.

In front of a group of ISIS followers, he created an Instagram account on a social networking site, which was later blocked for violating the site’s rules. Additionally, he watched videos showing how to combine chemicals to make explosives and exchanged illegal photographs.
He testified throughout the investigations that the group’s members had persuaded him that allegiance oaths and migration to the Islamic Caliphate State were required in order for it to exist and prosper.

The Criminal Court previously acquitted the accused due to his young age, claiming that his curiosity about his religion and ignorance were used against him to pull him from a warped category of viewpoints that have nothing to do with Islam.
