In a vote of no confidence, the Montenegrin parliament deposed the administration.

Montenegro’s coalition government fell after parliamentarians supported a vote of no-confidence moved by the country’s president’s party and minor parties in the ruling coalition.

According to the Balkan Insight news site, the administration led by Dritan Abazovic, the leader of the Ora movement, has the shortest tenure in office in Montenegro’s political history, having only taken power in April. The toppling of the administration increased the country’s political instability.

In yesterday night’s vote, the administration defeated the votes of 50 members in the 81-seat parliament.

The vote signifies the end of Abazovic’s political cooperation with the country’s president’s party, the Social Democratic Party, which lost power in August 2020 after three decades but began backing the Abazovic government last April.

The request for a no-confidence vote in Abazovic’s administration came after he signed a contentious deal with the Serbian Orthodox Church, whose leadership does not fully recognize Montenegro’s independence, on August 3.
