Bell Media’regrets’ how it handled the situation. Lisa LaFlamme is being fired, and a workplace assessment is being planned.

CTV News’ parent company has announced an internal workplace assessment in response to criticism over the departure of Lisa LaFlamme as chief anchor.

Bell Media said in a statement that it “regrets” the way LaFlamme’s departure was handled, as it “may have given viewers the erroneous impression” that her illustrious career was unappreciated.

LaFlamme delivered a video statement on Monday, stating she was “surprised” to learn in June that Bell Media was terminating her contract at CTV National News. She stated that she kept the news under wraps until the specifics were worked out.

On the same day Monday, Bell Media announced both LaFlamme’s resignation and her replacement, drawing criticism from viewers and media analysts who believed LaFlamme deserved a fair send-off and career retrospective after 35 years with the firm.

The firing also sparked speculation about whether sexism and ageism had a factor in the reorganization.

In a statement issued today, Bell Media stated that company takes complaints of discrimination “extremely seriously” and is taking measures to launch an impartial, third-party internal workplace assessment.
