Three workmen suffocated in a coal well in Morocco.

Authorities in the eastern Moroccan province of Jerada announced the death of three workers asphyxiated in a coal well today, Tuesday.
According to a local authority source, three people died of carbon dioxide suffocation on Tuesday inside a coal mining well used by one of the lawfully founded cooperatives, adding that rescue workers sought to save the three fatalities, ages 52, 44, and 43, but their efforts were unsuccessful.

The deaths of two miners in abandoned coal wells that were being used illegally at the end of 2017 sparked a protest movement in the city of Jerada.
The protests, which lasted until the spring of 2018, demanded economic alternatives for local residents.
It did, however, result in the arrest of hundreds of activists and their convictions with varying jail sentences, until those who remained imprisoned were released with a royal pardon in June 2019.

Authorities reported the closure of hundreds of illegal coal mining wells in the region, as well as the issuance of permits and assistance to cooperatives seeking to exploit wells legally.
