France announces the departure of the final members of its Barkhane force for Mali.

The final French soldiers from the Barkhane contingent in Mali have reportedly left the country, according to the French General Staff’s announcement made today, Monday.
This announcement follows a protest by dozens of people costumed as living soldiers in Gao, Mali’s final stronghold under French rule, demanding that the French Barkhane forces withdraw within 72 hours.

After the August 2020 military coup, France and the Malian junta had a disagreement, and French forces that had been aiding Mali authorities in their struggle against the militants for nearly a decade decided to leave.
