Four persons guilty of firing rockets at Baghdad International Airport were sentenced to life in prison.

Four people were given life sentences by an Iraqi court on Sunday for firing missiles at the international airport in Baghdad.
According to a report by the Iraqi News Agency, the Karkh Criminal Court sentenced four criminals who participated in the crime of firing missiles at the Baghdad Airport on January 28, 2022, to life in prison.
The statement said, “The judgement against the defendants is based on the provisions of Article 4/1 of the Anti-Terrorism Law No. 13 of 2005.”

This is the first ruling in cases involving attacks on airports, buildings housing US interests in Iraq, or locations where members of the international coalition battling ISIS are stationed.
The verdict relates to an attack on Baghdad International Airport on January 28 that resulted in material damage to a runway and two empty aircraft on airport property, according to the Iraqi Civil Aviation Authority.

It is important to note that in Iraq, attacks by militias affiliated with Iran frequently target military installations housing American personnel.
Numerous assaults against military bases connected to the multinational coalition, American interests, or Western diplomacy have taken place recently in Iraq, which also shares a significant portion of its eastern border with Iran and is home to numerous local factions and militias.

Numerous missile and drone attacks have been launched against American targets after the US assassinated Qassem Soleimani, commander of the Quds Force in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, and Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis, deputy chairman of the Popular Mobilization Authority, in January 2020.
On January 8, 2020, Tehran launched 22 ballistic missiles towards the Ain al-Assad facility in the west and the Erbil base in the north in retaliation for the murder.

Although no one consistently takes credit for these attacks, Washington typically links them to pro-Tehran organisations.
