China summons US ambassador to protest Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan

The Chinese Foreign Ministry reported today, Tuesday, that it has summoned US Ambassador to Beijing Nicholas Burns to protest US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan.
In addition, the Chinese publication Global Times claimed in its electronic form that Shi Feng, the Chinese Vice Foreign Minister, summoned the US ambassador to China to voice Beijing’s opposition to Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan.

This visit is viewed as a significant provocation and a breach of the concept of one China. Earlier on Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stated that it is dishonourable for the US to breach its obligations on the Taiwan issue because it harms its national credibility, and that China’s attitude on the Taiwan issue is constant and will not change.

Nancy Pelosi stated that her travel to Taiwan supports the United States of America’s solid commitment to democracy in Taiwan, noting that conversations with Taiwan’s leadership confirm Washington’s support for its partner and the promotion of the two sides’ mutual interests.
