Putin: There will be no winner in a nuclear war and it should not take place

Russian President Vladimir Putin stated on Monday that there can be no winner in a nuclear war and that it should never be begun, emphasising that Russia always adheres to the wording and spirit of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

According to the Russian news agency “Sputnik,” Putin greeted participants and guests at the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons conference.

“We have met our commitments under bilateral agreements with the US on the reduction and restriction of relevant weaponry,” he added.

“We operate on the basis that there can be no winner in a nuclear war, and it should not be begun,” he said, “and we promote equal and indivisible security for all members of the global community.”

In another matter, Dmitry Peskov, the Russian Presidency’s (Kremlin) press spokesman, stated that if meetings between President Vladimir Putin and his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron occur, he will expose them.

“We will notify you of the contact and its date, if it takes place,” Peskov said in a press release, commenting on prospective discussions between Russian and French presidents today.

According to reports, Putin and Macron did not discuss the collected issues, particularly the situation in Ukraine, for about two months.

The French president spoke on the phone for an hour and a half with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky.

According to the Ukrainian President’s office, the two sides addressed security cooperation, financial help for Ukraine, and the sale of Ukrainian grain.
